1. Tom Herman

There might not be a more highly sought-after head coach right now than Houston Cougars coach Tom Herman. Yes, Les Miles is going to be getting a lot of phones calls, but the way that Herman has turned Houston into a college football powerhouse has turned the heads of athletic directors, and potentially even NFL teams, everywhere.

After spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator for Ohio State, Herman came into the Houston program and has lost just one game in two seasons, going 18-1 with a Peach Bowl win last season. Now, the Cougars are setting their sights on the College Football Playoff.

Yes, Herman signed a five-year extension before this season began, but we’ve seen coaches leave their program for great opportunities before. I’m not saying that Herman is going to leave, but if the Cougars make it into the CFP then programs everywhere are going to be inquiring about Herman’s interest in coaching for their respective schools.

Herman could stay in the state of Texas to coach the Longhorns, but it’s going to take a lot of convincing. Still, of all of the candidates out there to replace Charlie Strong, Herman is by far the best fit.
