Barring an upset down the road, Houston has the top spot in the Group of Five power rankings locked down. This week the Cougars took care of business against Connecticut, the only team to beat them last season. Greg Ward Jr. had a huge game against the Huskies, completing more than 80 percent of his passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns and adding another 65 yards and two TDs on the ground. The Cougars defense clamped down on UConn, allowing just 62 rushing yards and forced the Huskies to go three-and-out on six of their 14 possessions.

A trip to Navy looms next weekend, but as long as they escape Annapolis unbeaten Houston should be on track to meet Louisville with a 10-0 record on November 17. Last year we saw UConn pull off the massive upset against the Cougars, and any number of teams could pull off the feat again this season. (UCF looks like it could be the trap, coming during a lull period between games against SMU and Tulane.) If they make it to 13-0 and win the AAC a second straight year, though, Houston could be looking at more than just a New Year’s Six berth.
