Pac 12 Power Rankings Week 5: The conference has a new king
The Arizona Wildcats came within seconds to start their season off with a victory, but a last second field goal did them in and BYU went on to win 18-16. They went on to make quick work of both Grambling State and Hawaii for two straight victories. But after playing Washington two weeks ago and UCLA last week, they have lost two in a row and are now 0-2 in the Pac-12.
Arizona scored first and led seven-to-zero before the UCLA Bruins scored 24 unanswered points. The Bruins then led 31-10 with just under twelve minutes left in the fourth quarter before Arizona could score another touchdown to make it a reasonable two-touchdown game 31-17.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the Wildcats with the next two scores, as the team from Los Angeles would be the team to put those points on the board and put the game out of reach 45-17. With 0:38 seconds left Arizona would score their last touchdown as Khalil Tate connected with Cam Denson for 13 yards.
It also didn’t help that Arizona has become a MASH unit after the game against UCLA. Starting quarterback Brandon Dawkins suffered an apparent rib injury in the first half and sat out the second. Running back Nick Wilson appeared to re-injury his sprained ankle late in the first quarter and did not return. Not only that but, Offensive linemen Gerhard de Beer and Jacob Alsadek also got hurt during the game.
The schedule is not going to be kind to the team from the desert as they will now play #24 Utah and then USC. Utah is undefeated at home and lost just once. California beat Utah last week. The Trojans should offer and easier battle as they are now 2-3 on the season.
