College Football Rankings 2016: Projected AP Top 25 after Week 6
By Zach Bigalke
Oklahoma took care of business in the Red River Shootout against Texas at the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners held off a furious late charge by Charlie Strong’s team, but escaped Dallas with the 45-40 victory to move over .500 for the first time this season. Baker Mayfield threw for 390 yards and three scores. Samaje Perine took charge in the backfield, rushing for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Had the Sooners not lost four turnovers (two Mayfield interceptions, two fumbles) this game would not have been this close.
The Sooners’ only two losses have come to schools ranked second and sixth in the Top 25, which is why they’ve hovered around the polls even when sporting a losing record. The Big 12 is still entirely in play for Oklahoma, especially after this win pushed them to 2-0 in league play. Bob Stoops’ team faces Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Kansas for the rest of its October schedule and opens November with a weekday game at Iowa State. The final stretch — Baylor, at West Virginia, Bedlam at home versus Oklahoma State — will decide whether OU wins the Big 12 and gets into a New Year’s Six bowl.
