Houston blew their chances at the College Football Playoff on Saturday, falling in a 46-40 upset at Navy. Greg Ward Jr. had a big day statistically, throwing for 359 yards and rushing for another 94 while notching four total touchdowns, but he also coughed up three turnovers in defeat. As a result, the Cougars are likely going to plummet down the AP Top 25 this week. While they won’t fall all the way out of the rankings, a shot at the Group of Five’s automatic bid into a New Year’s Six bowl looks less and less likely to be granted to Houston this year.

Now the Cougars don’t even control their own fate in the American Athletic Conference. Houston should have no problem rebounding next week against Tulsa, and they round out the month with games against SMU and UCF. They shouldn’t suffer another conference loss this year, but one might end up being one too many if Navy continues to roll through their own AAC schedule. The November 17 showdown against Louisville just lost a lot of luster as a result of this upset.
