Even though he’s been the backup running back in Oklahoma for most of the season, Joe Mixon has gotten a chance to be the starter for the Sooners with Samaje Perine missing time with a pulled muscle.

Mixon has taken advantage of his opportunity as the workhorse back in Oklahoma. He had one of the best games a running back has had all season in college football this past week, putting up 263 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while adding another 114 yards and three scores in the passing game. A five-touchdown performance is definitely enough for him to make it into our running back power rankings.

On the year, Mixon has already put up over 1,000 total yards with eight total touchdowns despite splitting carries with Perine for most of the season. With all of the plays Mixon has made this season, the Sooners might want to consider giving him the bulk of the carries even when Perine returns.

If Mixon can keep putting up big numbers like he did against Texas Tech, there’s no reason he couldn’t crack the top five next week.
