College Football: 10 Highest Paid Coaches in NCAA in 2016
7. Kevin Sumlin
Total Annual Salary: $5,000,000
Kevin Sumlin is the first college football coach on this list to crack the $5 million mark. Much like Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin inspired early confidence in his fan base. Unlike Malzahn, however, Summing spent four seasons with a smaller program before debuting in the SEC. Texas A&M was able to pull Sumlin away from Houston after he spent four years building the program into an offensive juggernaut.
It looked like he’d have the same success in the SEC, but that was short lived. With Johnny Manziel at the helm, Texas A&M won 11 games and beat Alabama in Sumlin’s first year. The Aggies then won nine, eight and eight games the following three seasons. Much like Gus Malzahn again, Sumlin entered the 2016 season very much on the hot seat.
It appears, though, that Sumlin has figured things out in College Station. The Aggies have begun the season 6-1 and represented themselves well against Alabama. While their remaining schedule still has plenty of traps, A&M could very well see their highest win total since 2012.
