Group of Five: Week 9 Access Bowl Power Rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Tulsa has played out a similar script to the flagship school in its state. Like the Sooners, Tulsa has played its way back into conference contention after losing to Ohio State and Houston. Rather than the Cougars or Memphis, the two teams challenging Navy at this time last season, it is the Golden Hurricane that is locked in a tie at the top of the AAC West entering November. Last week they trounced the Tigers to reach bowl eligibility, with James Flanders rushing for 249 yards and five touchdowns against the Memphis defense to lead the way to victory.
This week Philip Montgomery’s team hosts East Carolina before a massive showdown against the Midshipmen in Annapolis on November 12. If they win against Navy, Tulsa will still have to beat UCF on the road and Cincinnati at home in the season finale. Should they take a second loss in conference play, the division would be decided by a convoluted three- or four-way tiebreaker scenario that would most likely not favor Tulsa.
