North Carolina welcomed Georgia Tech to Chapel Hill on Saturday, but they weren’t very welcoming. The Tar Heels demolished the Yellow Jackets 48-20, as Elijah Hood rushed for 168 yards and three scores. Mitch Trubisky threw for 329 yards and a touchdown in the win. They needed every yard, as the UNC defense gave up over 500 yards of offense against Georgia Tech’s run-heavy option game. It was a day of bending but not breaking, as the Tar Heels forced two fumbles and stalled two other drives for field goals.

Larry Fedora’s team is in an interesting position in the ACC Coastal. They are tied atop the division, but they need Virginia Tech to lose a game in order to play for the ACC championship. That’s because the Tar Heels lost at home 34-3 to the Hokies in a game marred by the inclement conditions wrought by Hurricane Matthew. The AP Top 25 has UNC up at 18th, five spots ahead of Virginia Tech, but the CFP dropped the Tar Heels below the source of their only conference loss. That will probably happen this week when the AP voters turn in new ballots.
