Kareem Hunt rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown and also caught six passes for 37 yards. Logan Woodside threw for 286 yards and three scores. Yet Toledo still needed an Aaron Covington interception in the final minute just to knock off sub-.500 Northern Illinois in Chicago on Wednesday night. The Rockets allowed 441 total yards of offense to the Huskies, had one fewer first down and three fewer minutes of possession, and nearly squandered their chance to compete for the MAC West.

But Toledo held on for the victory, moving to 8-2 on the season. They square off against Ball State on Wednesday night, needing to win in order to set up a winner-take-all showdown with Western Michigan on Black Friday. With no Power Five opponents on their schedule in 2016, Toledo’s margin for error was always going to be minimal. At this point they are more likely to play spoiler than emerge at the top of the Access Bowl hierarchy even if they do win the MAC.
