Though it is forgotten in the aftermath of Ohio State’s 2007 BCS defeat to Florida, Troy Smith was one of the surest things as a Heisman winner in the sport’s history. As one of only four Heisman winners to finish with over 90 percent of the available points, Smith won every region in the country and finished with nearly three times as many points in the final tally as runner-up Darren McFadden of Arkansas.
Smith was efficient and poised in leading Ohio State to the only undefeated regular season of 2006, completing 67 percent of his passes and leading the Big Ten in passing efficiency, passing yards per attempt, and passing touchdowns. He outdueled Michigan in a showdown of the top two ranked teams in the country to get the Buckeyes into the BCS national championship, securing the Heisman in the process.
