After a junior season in 1997 in which he finished the year with over 2000 yards from scrimmage and 25 touchdowns, Ricky Williams finished fifth in the Heisman voting. A year later, he racked up 2124 rushing yards in 11 games and added another 262 receiving yards in the regular season to run away with the Heisman. (Those figures are before he romped for 248 total yards against Mississippi State in the Cotton Bowl.)
As a result of his wire-to-wire dominance, Williams swept the Heisman voting across all six regions. The Longhorn running back earned 714 of the 921 first-place votes, and beat out a cluttered field of quarterbacks who all failed to distinguish themselves as more significant to their teams’ successes than Williams was in 1998. In Mack Brown’s first season as head coach, the running back made his job a whole lot easier as the Longhorns built the foundation for early 21st century success.
