Chris Weinke followed in Charlie Ward’s footsteps as Florida State’s second Heisman winner. A year earlier he had quarterbacked the Seminoles to the national title, setting himself up for a run at the Heisman in 2000. He would lead FSU back to the BCS championship game as Bobby Bowden’s team played for a national title for the third straight year, as the BCS system vaulted the Seminoles over rival Miami despite the Hurricanes dealing FSU its only loss of the regular season.
Though the Seminoles lost to Oklahoma in the title game, the senior quarterback surpassed his previous season statistics to finish ahead of Sooners quarterback Josh Heupel in a tight Heisman vote. Weinke threw for over 4000 yards to finish the year first nationally in yards per play and in total passing yards. His 33 touchdowns were the second-most in the country, and far ahead of all other national contenders that year.
