College Football Playoff Top 25 Projections after Championship Weekend
By Zach Bigalke
It wasn’t easy, but the Mountaineers scored their tenth win of the season in a tense 24-21 home finale against Baylor on Saturday. Justin Crawford rushed for 209 yards to pace West Virginia to the victory, while the defense forced four turnovers to mitigate the impact of allowing over 400 yards of offense. With their only losses coming to the two Oklahoma schools, West Virginia finished third in the Big 12.
Entering the season Dana Holgorsen’s team was picked by the media to finish seventh in the Big 12. Instead they are anchored in the top 15 of the College Football Playoff rankings. A New Year’s Six berth is out of reach for WVU, meaning that the Mountaineers will probably be headed to Orlando or another second-tier bowl game. One way or another, they should get an opponent worthy of their status.
PROJECTED BOWL DESTINATION: Russell Athletic Bowl (December 28)
