Pac-12 Football: Top 10 players heading into spring games
By Zach Bigalke
Last year Arizona went from 30th to 108th in passing offense, as the team gained nearly 100 fewer yards per game through the air than it did in 2015.
The Wildcats thought they had landed a gem in junior-college transfer Shawn Poindexter last year. But the receiver was a non-factor over the last two-thirds of the year after suffering a high-ankle sprain. His size (6-foot-7, 215 pounds) provides the opportunity to create major mismatches against Pac-12 secondaries, but only if he can remain healthy.
Heading into spring practice, the former volleyball player harbored the potential to be one of Arizona’s breakout stars. If the raw but promising wideout can become a consistent threat, the passing attack has a real chance to regain its former proficiency.
So far signs are pointing to Poindexter coming through on the challenge, and his final season as a Wildcat might help determine whether head coach Rich Rodriguez remains in Tucson beyond 2017.
