With running back Joe Williams no longer eligible to come out of retirement, the Utah offense will fall squarely on the shoulders of quarterback Troy Williams (no relation). That is, of course, if Williams can even retain the starting job.

Kyle Whittingham has brought in Alabama transfer Cooper Bateman to challenge for the spot behind center, and thus last year’s starter has to win his job all over again.

Thus one of the most intriguing storylines of the spring will be whether Williams — himself a transfer from Washington two years ago — can remain at the top of the depth chart. He will need to show far greater accuracy and consistency at the position, after completing just 53 percent of his passes last season.

Utah could be a Pac-12 dark horse with the right quarterback, and Williams must take the next leap or cede the position. Utah’s spring game is a must-see event.
