Defensive Backs

Starting safeties: Jordan Whitehead, Dennis Briggs
Backups: Jazzee Stocker, Phil Campbell

Jordan Whitehead enters the 2017 season as the Pittsburgh Panthers best player in 2017. He was a second team All-ACC selection a season ago. In 2015, he was the ACC Rookie of the Year. Whitehead should improve his production on a new-look defense one hopes. Their defense enters the season healthy and with players at new positions.

Alongside him at the other safety spot is Dennis Briggs. Briggs played in all 13 games last season as a reserve safety. He has made 26 appearances in the past two seasons on the Panthers defense.

Jazzee Stocker is listed as one backup safety. He played in 11 games last season as a member of the special teams and as a reserve safety. Phil Campbell is the other backup safety. He was a redshirt player last season.

Starting cornerbacks: Avonte Maddox, Phillipie Motley
Backups: Therran Coleman, Dane Jackson

Avonte Maddox appeared in 10 of 13 games for the Panthers defense last season. He missed the team’s final three games due to injury. Phillipie Motley played in nine games last season before missing the final four games due to injury as well. He’s listed as the team’s other starting cornerback entering 2017.

Therran Coleman and Dane Jackson are listed as the backup cornerbacks this season. Jackson has 12 games of experience under his belt including a 20-yard interception for a return for a touchdown.

Therran Coleman was a redshirt player a season ago. He is set to get some playing time as a member of the 2016 recruiting class.
