The Vanderbilt Commodores had the No. 100 passing offense in college football last season. It was worse than Charlotte, San Jose State and Ball State. Their total offensive ranking wasn’t any better. The ‘Dores finished 110th in the nation in total yards per game. To call their offense underwhelming would be a hyperbole. But don’t forget about Ralph Webb.

  • Webb was the fourth leading rusher in the SEC on an offense that didn’t go anywhere. 10 SEC running backs topped 1,000 yards on the ground last season, but none of them were a part of an offense nearly as dysfunctional as Webb.

Already the all-time leader in career rushing yards at Vanderbilt, Webb will pad his stats in 2017. He won’t have much help from junior quarterback Kyle Shurmur who threw more interceptions than touchdowns. The Commodores’ offensive line is undergoing some changes as well and returns just 41 career starts (13th best in the SEC).

For all the adversity he faces, Webb has continued to make play after play. He lead the SEC in total carries and will find himself with plenty of time with the ball in 2017.

Last season the Commodores reached their first bowl game under head coach Derek Mason. Their bowl eligibility-clinching win came in upset fashion over the Tennessee Volunteers. Who iced that game? None other than Webb who busted a 28 yard touchdown run in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game away for good.
