4. Lack of proven experience

Whether you look at Shane Buechele, Chris Warren III, Devin Duvernay or Collin Johnson, Texas does not have many proven options on their roster right now. Warren III has dealt with injuries since he started his college career.

Duvernay has not posted more than 500 receiving yards and five touchdowns yet. He’s just a highly recruited player that Texas managed to nab out of the hands of Baylor.

More from Texas Longhorns

Buechele is the most proven player on Texas’ roster but he had a rough finish to the 2016 campaign. Progression to his sophomore season is very possible. Yet, it is hard to say that it is probable that Buechele will do much better than 25 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He threw 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions his freshman year.

The receiving corps is possibly the most unproven group on the entire Texas roster. They’ve had a case of the drops for the past two years, making it difficult for any Longhorn quarterback to find his footing.

The defense has more proven talent, led by linebacker Malik Jefferson. The defensive line can be a force to be reckoned with if Poona Ford and Malcolm Roach play up to their potential. Yet, that still leaves a few question marks at two levels on the defense.
