1. Weak secondary

The phrase “defense wins championships” might not be as true as it used to be. Looking at the last five champions, most of them did not win because of their defense. The Clemson Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, and Ohio State Buckeyes all won National Titles because of their offense. Yet, they all had competent secondaries as well.

Texas does not have anything really set in the secondary. Cornerback Kris Boyd and safety DeShon Elliott are the most proven options. Boyd only has one career interception and Elliott was not even a consistent starter until the middle of last season.

The other two projected starters in the secondary are sophomore safety Brandon Jones and junior cornerback Davante Davis. Jones has 15 career total tackles and Davis only has one career interception and one career forced fumble.
