Defensive Line

Starting tackles: David Moa, Sonatane Lui
Backups: Daniel Auelua, Emmanuel Fesili

David Moa enters 2017 on the watch lists for the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Outland Awards. He started all 13 games last season as a redshirt sophomore. As an elder statesman on defense, Moa will be called upon to anchor a defensive line in transition. Alongside him at nose tackle is most likely going to be Sonatane Lui, who appeared in 12 games last season as a freshman.

Fellow sophomore Emmanuel Fesili could see playing time behind Lui, having entered two games last year as a reserve. Junior college transfer Daniel Auelua could also see increased playing time as well in his senior season, after playing in all 13 games in 2016.

Starting ends: Durrant Miles, Jabril Frazier
Backups: Chase Hatada, Sam Whitney

Losing Sam McCaskill is going to be tough. Durrant Miles and Jabril Frazier are the most likely players to start at the ends of the line after earning the roles at various points last season. Miles played in 24 games over the past two seasons and started six at defensive end in 2016. Frazier has the inside track on the edge-rushing position on the other end, having started seven games last year as a redshirt sophomore.

Chase Hatada and Sam Whitney, the backups at end and stud respectively, earned limited experience last year. Hatada, who can play both end and tackle, saw action in seven games as a true freshman. Whitney made five appearances in his first season after redshirting in 2015.
