Quarterbacks

Starting quarterback: Austin Allen
Backup: Ty Storey

It’s safe to say that Allen has the QB1 job locked up nice and tight. Allen wasn’t a world-beater in his first season as a starter in 2016, but he still put up impressive numbers — 3,430 yards passing and 25 touchdowns.

The big issue with Allen was taking care of the football, as he tossed 15 interceptions and struggled mightily with turnovers against the SEC’s top teams. Any hopes of the Hogs punching into the conference’s first tier likely start and end with their starting quarterback’s decision-making. For what it’s worth, he’s been stellar in fall practices… but a scout team defense is a lot different than Alabama’s defense.

The battle for the backup spot in still raging throughout camp, with the sophomore Storey trying to hold off 6-foot-7 redshirt freshman Cole Kelley. We’ll give Storey the edge for now on account of his experience, but Kelley has drawn praise from the the coaching staff this offseason and could very well steal the job.

The competition won’t end here, as the two underclassmen will likely be the top two contenders for Allen’s starting spot upon the senior’s graduation.
