Boise State Football: 5 breakout candidates for the Broncos in 2017
By Zach Bigalke
For the Broncos to emerge as Mountain West champions this season, they will need big contributions from everyone on offense. As a freshman and sophomore, Roh caught 68 passes for 765 yards and three touchdowns. It seemed like the Broncos had their next great star at tight end heading into the 2016 season.
Then Roh injured his knee in fall camp heading into last year. Instead of a breakout campaign, Roh’s junior season was instead a year filled with disappointment. He only saw the field four times in 2016, registering just four catches for 59 yards in the regular season. Against Baylor in the Cactus Bowl, Roh managed to put up his best performance of the season with six receptions for 54 yards.
After taking the offseason to heal, Roh returns to Boise State for his senior season in full health. While he will still split time with blocking tight end Alec Dhaenens in 2017, Roh will also begin to develop into a more complete tight end as well. At 6-foot-3 and 227 pounds, Roh has the requisite size to serve as a useful blocker in addition to remaining a dangerous target in the passing game.

Look for the senior to make a bigger name for himself this season. Especially given the depleted receiving corps, Roh could nab 50 or more catches this season. A year later than originally expected, 2017 will be the season where Jake Roh breaks out as one of the best tight ends in the country.
