Group of Five: 2017 college football preseason power rankings
By Zach Bigalke
For the past two years, Boise State has failed to follow through on the annual goal of winning the Mountain West. That has left the Broncos looking in from the outside at the opportunity to play in a New Year’s Six game. The team that defined mid-major success between 2006 and 2014 has tapered off a bit in the Group of Five era as they have failed to even win their division in 2015 and 2016.
Head coach Bryan Harsin certainly has a talented crew on the field in Boise. But they will be largely unproven, after returning just nine of their 22 starters from last year’s roster. Returning quarterback Brett Rypien will be working with a new group of skill players after the loss of several top receivers as well as running back Jeremy McNichols.

Tough games against Washington State out of conference loom alongside showdowns with Wyoming, Colorado State, and Air Force. The Broncos also have to face two-time defending MWC champion San Diego State on the road in their bid for the Group of Five invitation.
Expectations are always high for Boise State. But this year the team celebrates its 30th season of playing on Smurf Turf, and they would love to make major waves this year with the historic occasion at hand. Harsin could find himself on the hot seat next season if he fails to follow through on winning not just the MWC but also the Group of Five.
