Kansas State football: 2017 season preview, predictions
Defense
The Kansas State defense returns a respectable number of starters from 2016: six. Obviously, that makes five total starters lost, four of them significant.
On the defensive line, the Wildcats lose Jordan Willis who had 11.5 sacks in 2016. The next highest number came from Reggie Walker at just 6.5 sacks. He should raise that total in 2017, although it remains to be seen whether he can match Willis’ production. Walker is one of the largest talents on the defense, along with defensive tackle Will Geary. Tanner Wood should be another key member of the line, while Trey Dishon rounds out the group.
The defensive backs group is led by cornerbacks DJ Reed and Duke Shelley. Reed was tied for second on the team in tackles with 75, while he led the team with 16 passes broken up. Safety Dante Barnett is a tough loss, although JUCO transfer Elijah Walker should make a good replacement.
Finally, the biggest area of weakness across the team is at linebacker. The team lost its leading tackler in Elijah Lee. The first team All-Big 12 selection will be difficult to replace. Additionally, the team loses Charmeachealle Moore who was tied with Reed for second on the team in tackles (75). Snyder did bring in JUCO transfer Da’Quan Patton and the unit returns senior Trent Tanking who looked solid in limited snaps in 2016.
Secondary strength?
The biggest area of strength on the team could be the secondary. The Wildcats return first team All-Big 12 selection DJ Reed who had a whopping 16 passes broken up last season. Duke Shelley started 10 games in 2016 with 48 tackles and three interceptions. Strong safety Kendall Adams started all 13 games last season. Then, there is JUCO transfer Elijah Walker. Walker was rated a four-star JUCO prospect. Since arriving, he has impressed teammates with his dedication in the film room and hard-hitting style. This is one of the most experienced secondary units the program has seen in years.
