Notre Dame football started off the season with 49-16 victory over the Temple Owls. Here are three things we learned along the way.

The Temple Owls arrived at Notre Dame stadium earlier today eager for a first week win. However, it was clear on the first drive that the Irish were playing with an even greater passion. Coming off a dismal 4-8 season, Notre Dame was in much more need of a solid start than last year’s AAC leading Owls.

There was a lot of hype coming into this game, and the Irish did well in playing off of it. There is a ton of pressure on this new offensive regime. They orchestrated their first win to perfection. Without further ado, here are three things we learned from today’s hard-fought battle.

3. Wimbush has what it takes to lead the Irish

Year after year Notre Dame fans are perplexed by the question regarding who will lead the charge at quarterback. Before Everett Golson there was the presence of Malik Zaire, before DeShone Kizer there was again the looming presence of Zaire. Also before Brandon Wimbush were the questions pertaining to his ability to come in and play with little experience.

However, after watching his performance against the Owls, it’s clear that Wimbush is capable of taking this team to where they want to be. Now, keep in mind that ‘where they want to be’ isn’t the College Football Playoff. This coaching staff knows their limits and knows what a successful season out of their new quarterback will really look like.

Wimbush sharp in his Irish debut

With that said, Wimbush’s first performance will likely have the thought of another national championship appearance forming in the heads of Irish fans countrywide. Wimbush completed over half of his passes for 184 yards and two scores, finishing with a 123.5 quarterback rating.

Wimbush also contributed greatly in the run game, adding 106 yards on 12 attempts. He also added a score on the ground by way of a shifty escape after a play call miscommunication. The first year starter showed plenty of flashes, extending numerous plays with his feet.

However, as many will point out, Wimbush’s feet might end up getting him in trouble. There were multiple times when it looked as if Wimbush was going to settle for the yardage presented him, just for him to pull a spin move or turn on the jets before taking a big hit. This will be an issue Kelly will jump on quickly, as it is not worth losing Wimbush for a few extra yards.

Wimbush did toss one questionable interception, but a few mistakes were to be expected in his first game. All in all, it was a great game for the new quarterback and should instill much confidence in both himself and his coaches.
