1. Josh Adams has some company in the backfield

It was certainly expected that Adams would be handing some carries over to his comrades in Notre Dame’s deep backfield, but his backups weren’t expected to do quite this well. Dexter Williams put up 124 yards on only six rushes, and Wimbush added some yards himself. This may lead to less time for Adams, but certainly not due to his play.

Adams posted a spectacular 8.5 yards per carry for himself, rushing for 161 yards and two touchdowns on the day. His scores on the ground were only two of five rushing touchdowns for the Irish, showing that there is a lot of work to go around in this deep backfield.

Adams shouldn’t have to worry about losing touches due to performance this season, but a very diverse backfield may be cause for a share the wealth mentality across the board. While the rushing performance the Irish saw in this game may not be replicated anytime soon, don’t be surprised to hear the names Dexter Williams and Tony Jones Jr. mentioned a tad more frequently.

Adams is the most talented back on this roster, and that was evident even in this game. He lost some touches to garbage time, but should be ready to take control again when Georgia travels to South Bend next week.

With both teams looking for a big win in week one, it was the Irish who clearly proved they were the better football team. It will be interesting to see whether or not these two teams will continue down their respective paths or if we will see different outcomes in their next contests.
