College Football Playoff 2017: Projected top 4 after Week 1
Nearly perfect is the first phrase that comes to mind when describing quarterback Baker Mayfield’s performance in the Oklahoma Sooners’ season opening victory over the UTEP Miners, 56-7.
Mayfield went 19-for-20 passing for 329 passing yards and three passing touchdowns in the Sooners first game under head coach Lincoln Riley. He completed touchdown passes to three different receivers in the game.
Mayfield created a new connection with tight end Mark Andrews in Week One. Andrews caught seven receptions for 134 receiving yards and a touchdown in the Sooners victory.
Running backs Adbul Adams, Marcelias Sutton and Trey Sermon split a bulk of the carries out of the backfield for the Oklahoma Sooners. Adams led the way with 53 rushing yards. Sutton had nine carries for 52 rushing yards and a touchdowns.
Sermon finished with seven carries for 51 rushing yards.
The Sooners defense allowed a touchdown in the first quarter, but held the Miners scoreless for the rest of the game after that. They held the Miners to 11 first downs and just 167 total yards of offense.
They set a new tone after allowing the Miners to score on their first drive of the game and they stuck to it after that.
Mayfield and the Sooners offense reeled off 676 total yards of offense, 35 first downs and zero turnovers in the game.
