Alabama knocked off No. 3 Florida State on Saturday night in another neutral-site opener. It wasn’t the prettiest of performances by an offense that seemed to miss, in some little way, the magic that offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin brought to the group. A more workmanlike effort was paced by a collective rushing effort and just 96 passing yards from Jalen Hurts.

The Tide defense stepped up in its usual big way, though. Florida State was held to just 40 rushing yards on 27 attempts, averaging less than a yard an a half per carry. The defense also baited Deondre Francois into two interceptions. In total, the Seminoles finished with just 250 yards of total offense. On special teams, Alabama blocked a punt and a field goal and recovered Keith Gavin‘s fumble on a kickoff return.

Fresno State and Colorado State visit Tuscaloosa over the next two weeks, allowing Nick Saban and his staff plenty of opportunities to correct what few mistakes the team made in Atlanta. For now, though, they are No. 1 until further notice after scoring the biggest win vis-à-vis the preseason AP Top 25 over the course of Week 1.
