The Virginia Tech Hokies overcame a late missed field goal that would have put the game away to get a victory 31-24 over the West Virginia Mountaineers at FedEx Field.

It was a back-and-forth battle before Virginia Tech took control late in the fourth quarter.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson was stellar in his debut as the Hokies’ quarterback. Jackson finished the game with 235 passing yards, 101 rushing yards, a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown.

Cam Phillips also had a strong game with seven catches for 138 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Jackson showed poise in leading the offense on a six-play, 82-yard drive that ended with a three-yard rushing touchdown by running back Travon McMillian with 6:30 remaining in the game.

A missed 32-yard field goal by the Virginia Tech Hokies with 1:55 remaining in the game giving the Mountaineers another chance to score late. The Hokies defense would go on to stop West Virginia, forcing an incomplete pass as time expired at their own 15-yard line.

Mountaineers’ quarterback Will Grier proved to be as-advertised, throwing for 371 passing yards and three touchdowns. Virginia Tech’s defense allowed 592 total yards of offense against a good Mountaineers’ receiving corps.

Two players combined for 22 receptions against them. The Hokies shouldn’t face a tougher group of receivers until Clemson comes to Blacksburg on September 30.

This week, the Hokies will turn their attention to the Delaware Blue Hens. They’re an FCS-foe who defeated the Delaware State Hornets 22-3 in their season opener.

It shouldn’t be a close game.
