The Syracuse Orange got out to a hot start and never looked back in their 50-7 victory over the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils. Quarterback Eric Dungey went 28-for-36 (77.8 percent) with 328 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. On the ground, he had nine carries for 51 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Five touchdowns for Dungey is always a plus for the Orange. If it can translate into games against tougher opponents, this team could become a problem.

Wide receiver Steve Ishmael set new career-highs in receptions (12) and receiving yards (134), while Moe Neal had a 52-yard reception for a touchdown and Ervin Phillips had six catches for 71 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The Orange were their usual selves in the passing game, but the running game came up a bit short on the progress side. The Orange finished with 155 rushing yards on 41 carries against the Blue Devils (3.8 yards per carry).

Dungey may not be able to pick up the slack in the running game in future attacks so getting push up front should definitely be a focus this week in game preparation. Running back Dontae Strickland finished with 12 carries for 38 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

The Syracuse defense held the Central Connecticut to 54 rushing yards, 113 passing yards and a passing touchdown in the game. Their lone score came in the third quarter.

It’s good for their confidence as they’ll face Middle Tennessee State and speedy receiver Richie James. James caught 10 receptions for 112 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown against Vanderbilt last week.
