College football’s AP Poll results after Week 1 have been released and here’s the latest verdict.
The AP Poll has released after a weekend full of college football action. Teams have been chomping at the bit to play other opponents and some of them showed that, while others faltered.
There were three showdowns in the AP Top 25 rankings.
The first-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the third-ranked Florida State Seminoles, 24-7. The 11th-ranked Michigan Wolverines beat the 17th-ranked Florida Gators soundly, 33-17. The 21st-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies pulled out a 31-24 victory over the 22nd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers to retain the Black Diamond Trophy.
The higher ranked teams went 3-0 in college football’s opening weekend. The Crimson Tide’s victory was Nick Saban’s 19th victory against a top five opponent in the AP Poll, a new record.
Outside of ranked matchups, two other teams were the only ones to lose their opening game. The 23rd-ranked Texas Longhorns and 25th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers both lost to unranked opponents.
Power Five Conference-wise, the SEC went 12-2, the ACC went 10-4, the Big 12 went 7-3, the Big Ten went 11-3 and the Pac-12 went 12-1 in Week One.
None of the Power 5 conferences went undefeated but the Pac-12 was one conference that was full of surprises.
The Willie Taggart era is off to a fast start in Eugene.
The Oregon Ducks put up 77 points in their season opening victory over Southern Utah, setting a new school record for points scored in Autzen Stadium.
