Even though Western Michigan put in such a strong performance in Los Angeles last Saturday, they still might not even be the best team in their division. Toledo was selected ahead of the Broncos to take the MAC West in the preseason polls, and they gave no indication of being below their anticipated form in a comfortable 47-13 win over FCS Elon in Week 1.

Logan Woodside put in another strong performance to begin his final season quarterbacking the Rockets. Woodside finished with 314 yards (but no touchdowns) on 19-of-31 passing. The Rockets also showcased a formidable ground game to balance its aerial attack. Shakif Seymour led the team with 102 yards and a score on 11 carries. As a group, Toledo’s backfield finished with four rushing touchdowns and 239 yards.

This, of course, all happened against a lower-subdivision opponent. And just as it would be silly to read too much into these stats, so to is the fact that Toledo’s defense held the Phoenix under 200 yards of offense. Interestingly, though, the Rockets actually lost the turnover battle against their FCS opponent in the home opener.

Non-conference games against fellow Group of Five squads Nevada and Tulsa loom next on the schedule for the Rockets. The biggest game of the season outside the MAC, though, comes on September 23 with a visit to Florida to face the Miami Hurricanes.
