The Iowa State Cyclones kicked off the 2017 season with a 42-24 win and a record-setting day by senior wide receiver Allen Lazard. On back-to-back catches in the fourth quarter, Lazard tied – then broke – the school record for career receptions (177).

While taking care of in-state rival Northern Iowa, there was a lot going on Saturday in Ames.

New starting quarterback Jacob Park completed 27 of his 34 pass attempts for 271 yards and two scores, but did throw one interception. Both of his touchdowns went to separate targets, too. Sophomore running back David Montgomery led the team in rushing, tallying 82 yards and two scores on his 14 carries.

The former starting quarterback Joel Lanning saw significant time on the opposite side of the ball, racking up seven tackles and causing pressure on a play that ended in a defense touchdown.

The above clip brings us to the Cyclone defense. Where did all that come from?! Not only did they get this defensive touchdown, the Cyclones would score on another interception minutes later to go up 14-7. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, though. The defense did give up nearly 400 yards, but won the battles on third down 73 percent of the time.

Iowa State will be put to the test this weekend against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Big 12 is 0-1 against the Big 10 this season (thanks, Texas), but Matt Campbell and the Cyclones could even the score.
