Pac-12 Football: 5 teams on upset alert in Week 2
By Zach Bigalke
Like many of its other Pac-12 counterparts, No. 20 Washington State is riding the high of a rout over a lower-subdivision opponent. The Cougars’ FCS challenger in Week 1, Montana State, was no match for Luke Falk and the high-powered offense. Luke Falk was perfect in the air in the first half, cooling down as he threw less in the second half.
The defense also had a solid effort as they took down the Bobcats, holding a run-based attack to just 115 yards on the ground. Their challenger in Week 2, however, is a major step up in competition. Boise State has pretensions of returning to the top of the Group of Five pecking order in 2017, and the Broncos certainly have a loaded roster for a mid-major program.
Boise State already has a win over Sun Belt contender Troy under its belt. And many of the players on Bryan Harsin’s roster already know how it feels to take down Washington State after beating the Cougars in Boise last year. The Broncos always relish the opportunity to claim another victory over a Pac-12 school.
This is no ordinary Week 2 visit by a Group of Five opponent, but a battle between teams dreaming of New Year’s Six appearances in 2017. The fact that the Broncos are only a one-touchdown underdog attests to their threat level. Mike Leach will need to make sure his squad is on high alert for a potential upset.
