The good news is that Arizona State won its game against New Mexico State 37-31. The bad news is the Sun Devils’ defense gave up 550 yards, including 398 yards in the air to New Mexico State. If NMSU can do to that to the Sun Devils’ secondary, imagine what Pac-12 quarterbacks will do. Due to struggles in the secondary it appears the Sun Devils are in for an uphill climb, and rocky 2017. After that performance, I have to put Arizona State on upset alert for Week 2.

Week 2 opponent: San Diego State

There wasn’t much knowledge to be gained about the Wildcats from their 62-24 beat down of Northern Arizona. The most glaring thing on the stat sheet was the breakdown of Arizona’s offense. The Wildcats had 595 yards of offense, but only 89 passing yards. Their quarterback, Brandon Dawkins, is extremely effective when running with the ball. It will be interesting to see how he fairs when forced to pass. We will find out a lot more about Arizona in Week 2.

Week 2 opponent: Houston

I did not expect California to beat North Carolina on the road, but it did. Last week, the Golden Bears were last in my Week 1 Pac-12 power rankings. For the last couple seasons, Cal had one of the worst defenses in the nation. All signs were pointing to a multi-year rebuild for the Golden Bears’ defense, but the showed significant improvement in Week 1. The Golden Bears proved they will be no pushover in the Pac-12.

Week 2 opponent: Weber State
