Texas A&M Football: 5 bold predictions vs. Nicholls State
2. Winning doesn’t cool off Sumlin’s seat
Kevin Sumlin could win by 200 points on Saturday and it isn’t going to matter. The truth is his audition to keep his current job is effectively in a holding pattern for the next two weeks. The Aggies games against Nicholls State and Louisiana-Lafayette will probably still be sell outs. Kyle Field will be loud, fans will have fun but Sumlin isn’t going to save his job over the weekend.
Instead it’s going to get a bit toastier in Aggieland. The public criticism of Board of Regents member Tony Buzbee is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Kevin Sumlin frustrations that will play out in the social media stream over the coming weeks.
Someone else is going to come out on Saturday with another hot take. It’s going to be someone important that carries a lot of weight with the Texas A&M fanbase. That could be a former player, coach or even someone else within the current university system. But it’s coming. Texas A&M isn’t going to look “good enough” or win by enough points and that will be the last straw for someone else.
Texas A&M travels to Arlington in Week 4 to play Arkansas in Dallas Cowboys Stadium and return home to host a rising South Carolina team in Week 5. The following weekend the Aggies meet Alabama at Kyle Field before a road trip to Gainesville to play Florida wraps up the first half of their season entering a Week 8 bye week. It could be trouble if Kevin Sumlin isn’t at least .500 after the first half of the SEC slate.
