College Football: 5 Power Five teams that will miss a bowl in 2017
By Zach Bigalke
A bowl appearance is the primary goal for most Power Five college football teams. These five 2016 bowl teams are in danger of missing the 2017 postseason.
Every year, it seems like at least one Power Five team collapses after posting a solid campaign the previous season. This year, teams seem to be dropping by the wayside before we even reach the midpoint of September. 2017 has already offered the chance to see some teams’ dreams of a bowl game slip away before the season really even began.
Maybe that statement is a bit drastic, as there is still a lot of season left to play. But if early losses make it that much harder to reach the College Football Playoff, they also demonstrate a team that probably just isn’t as good as was hoped. After all, rare is the team that can reel off an unbroken string of victories after already falling in a deficit in the standings.
A few of the teams on this list will probably rebound to make bowl games this year. But the odds are good that there are also a few collapses due to occur among teams that were in the 2016 postseason shuffle. Click ahead to see which five Power Five schools are likely going to be sitting at home watching bowl games instead of playing in them in 2017.
