Baylor has completely fallen off the edge of the earth after riding on borrowed time last year. Matt Rhule’s first season in Waco has been one string of ineptitude, as the Bears collapsed last weekend to Liberty and followed it up with another stinker in Week 2. The Bears are in danger not just of missing out on a bowl game but of going winless all season long.

The UTSA team that came to McLane Stadium on Saturday was forced to cancel its season opener with Houston by the approach of Hurricane Harvey. They returned to the field for the first time in 2017 when they traveled up the I-35 to face the Bears. The Roadrunners, if anything, looked like the Power Five squad among the two teams. UTSA held a once-vaunted Baylor passing attack to 137 yards on 11-of-27 passing.

Two big rushing plays artificially inflated Baylor’s numbers on the ground. Aside from a burst of 26 yards by Chris Platt and a 31-yard run by Tony Nicholson, the Bears averaged two yards per carry on their other 29 running plays. The offense was sputtering in every way, and their only hope was that the Roadrunners wouldn’t do enough to take advantage.

But Dalton Sturm and the UTSA offense did enough. Sturm went for 155 passing yards and two scores, with another 98 rushing yards to boot. Jalen Rhodes top 100 rushing yards for the Roadrunners as well. It was a comprehensive loss, as the Conference USA visitors took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter and never looked back. From this point onward, Baylor losses won’t be upsets until they demonstrate an ability to actually win.
