2. It’s not Boise State’s year to make a New Year’s Six Bowl

While Boise State took care of business against a good Mountain West opponent, it’s not what fans were looking for. If the Broncos were in competition to be the best Group of Five program this year, they would have put away New Mexico a lot earlier than the fourth quarter.

We’ll see what happens when Boise State gets Rypien back. The biggest positive from this game came from the Bronco defense that held the Lobos to only seven points. Barring a vicious hit from Chase Hatada against starting Lobo quarterback Lamar Jordan, all levels of the defense did their part.

Junior linebacker Leighton Vander Esch even intercepted a deflected pass from backup New Mexico quarterback Coltin Gerhart. That really ended up sealing the game for the Broncos. It resulted in a touchdown just a few plays later.

Some significant improvement needs to be shown in four key games for the Broncos over the next four weeks. Boise State gets the Wyoming Cowboys and Virginia Cavaliers at home and the BYU Cougars and San Diego State Aztecs on the road.
