3. Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners and quarterback Baker Mayfield moved down a spot in the College Football Playoff ranks, but it’s not any fault of their own. It’s more to do with the firepower Clemson seems to have returned at a quicker rate than them.

The Sooners had two turnovers in their victory over Tulane. Tight end Mark Andrews fumbled on their first drive of the game. After losing the lead 14-7, Oklahoma went on to score 21 straight points to lead 28-14 at halftime. After that, they scored another 28 points to go on a 49-0 scoring run to end the game.

Their second fumble came when the game was decided but mistake-free football is the difference between success and failure, especially at the college level. Oklahoma had two fumbles early in their game a few weeks ago against Ohio State but the defense held strong to not allow any touchdowns.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield still had 331 passing yards and four touchdowns in the game. Wide receivers Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb both had over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in the game. Brown caught six passes for 155 receiving yards and a touchdown. Lamb caught 131 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Although the Sooners are coming off an impressive 31-16 victory over Ohio State and defeated Tulane 56-14 in Week 3, it’s tough to put them above Clemson. This week, Oklahoma will face Baylor on the road in their Big 12 season opener. The Bears are 0-3 this season.
