2. The receivers are completely at fault for offensive struggles

Let’s get this straight- Notre Dame’s wide receivers were absolutely abysmal this week. Their most talented receiver in Equanimeous St. Brown has struggled to get anything going in the last few weeks, yet has still managed to be the best at the position up to this point.

St. Brown was expected to be in the conversation with Malcolm Floyd, Golden Tate, and Will Fuller by the time his career with the Irish was done, but he has failed to come close to those expectations so far this season. He played well with DeShone Kizer throwing him the ball last year, but has struggled mightily alongside the dual-threat Wimbush.

Chris Finke hasn’t played much of a role either, and Notre Dame has been using their tight ends as blockers more than anything else. Thus far, this looks like a completely dysfunctional receiving corps.

However, to absolve Wimbush of blame for the struggles in the passing game would be wrong. Wimbush, time and time again put his receivers in tough positions by throwing high, and eventually paid for it with an interception.

St. Brown had a couple of opportunities to make a big catch, but saw both passes fall incomplete. The wide receiver play has been unacceptable up to this point, but a strong run game has been able to mask their difficulties so far.

While the receivers have had trouble getting separation and making plays for the Irish, Wimbush hasn’t given them the best opportunities to come down with the ball either. At the end of the day, who gets the blame is inconsequential, but the Irish will need to find a way to get things going before it’s too late.
