College Football: Group of 5 Week 4 power rankings
By Zach Bigalke
Houston belatedly played its season opener in Week 2, after their opener at UTSA was canceled due to Hurricane Harvey. Once they finally took the field for the first time, the Cougars looked listless against Arizona. They still managed to emerge with a 19-16 win in Tucson. All-American defensive lineman Ed Oliver and the Cougars defense clamped down on the Wildcats, but Major Applewhite‘s offense struggled to put points on the board against Arizona.
They turned things around in Week 3, easily taking down crosstown rival Rice in a 38-3 blowout. The defense allowed fewer than 250 yards of offense to the Owls, and also forced three turnovers to ensure no possibility of a comeback. New Houston starting quarterback Kyle Allen was a ridiculous 31-of-33 for 39 yards and two touchdowns to fuel the victory.
Now 2-0 on the season, Houston goes hunting for another statement win over a Power Five opponent this weekend when Texas Tech comes to town. The Red Raiders are fresh off a shootout win over Arizona State, and they will be itching to remain on track to potentially make noise in the Big 12 this year.
