Boise State Football: 3 bold predictions for Virginia game
By Zach Bigalke
2. Alexander Mattison will explode for his first big game of 2017
Entering the year, Alexander Mattison looked like he might be the heir apparent in a chain of stellar Boise State running backs. So far in 2017, though, the sophomore has been trading off carries with senior Ryan Wolpin. That appeared to change after the win over Troy, when Mattison led the team in rushing despite getting four fewer carries than his veteran teammate. But a mediocre outing against Washington State opened the door for Wolpin to take the workload in Week 3.
Mattison will look to regain his position as the top tailback on the team this week. Virginia ranks 87th nationally in rushing defense, affording the youngster an opportunity to make a name for himself against the Cavaliers like Rypien did two years ago. Though he will continue to split time with Wolpin, Mattison will make the most of his time on the field.
Boise State’s young runner is going to notch his first 100-yard game of the season, and could go over 150 total yards of offense with a few big catches. Look for Mattison to get into the endzone at least twice against the Cavaliers as he helps pace Boise State to a big victory. Mattison will seize the starting role in the backfield ahead of Mountain West play with his big performance against the ACC visitors on Friday night.
