2. Michigan State avoids a turnover

Turnovers often serve as deciding factors in close games, making them a significant point of emphasis heading into big matchups. Point of emphasis is probably an understatement compared to what head coach Mark Dantonio has likely been preaching to his team over the course of this week.

Despite winning both of their games handily up to this point, the Spartans have given up the ball five times in only two games. On top of that, Michigan State has put the ball on the ground three more times but have been lucky enough to pick those up. However, with an extra practice week under their belt, you better believe the Spartans will be holding the ball extra tight this weekend.

However, an extra week of practice may not be enough to fend off an Irish defense that has increased their takeaways on a weekly basis this season. Notre Dame got off to a slow start against Temple, recording only one turnover. However, they forced two against Georgia before taking away the ball three times against a struggling Boston College offense.

If the Spartan defense can hold off one of the nation’s top rushing attacks, they may be able to give their offense the opportunity to be more conservative with their play-calling. Despite the tall task, quarterback Brian Lewerke and the rest of his offense should be more prepared than ever to protect the football.
