Texas A&M Football: Aggies are a lock to beat the Razorbacks in SEC opener
3. The Aggie rushing attack is the best it’s ever been under Sumlin
Three different Aggie running backs have tallied at least 30 carries so far in 2017 and all of them have seen some measure of effectiveness. Trayveon Williams, Kendall Bussey and Keith Ford have 590 yards on the ground between them and seven touchdowns. That doesn’t even include freshman Jacob Kibodi who is averaging 20.8 (!) yards per carry on five touches.
In their loss to TCU, the Razorbacks allowed the Horned Frogs to tote the rock 42 times for 195 yards. An average of 4.6 yards per carry isn’t going to kill you, but it will keep your defense off the field. Three of TCU’s four touchdowns were scored after drives of seven yards or more.
This Texas A&M team isn’t as committed to the aerial assault as previous iterations of the maroon and white. A freshman quarterback combined with the losses of Josh Reynolds, Speedy Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones to the NFL has meant a newfound reliance in the running attack.
When something isn’t broken, don’t fix it. While the Aggie offensive line has had issues in pass protection, they’ve coaches have done a good job of getting their best players the ball in space so that they can make plays. Trayveon Williams is going to hit a long touchdown run or two. It’s almost inevitable.
