In an effort to reduce Manhattan's carbon footprint, New York's City Council is considering a bill that would limit the amount of external light commercial buildings may use when empty at night. If approved, the bill could alter the use of lights in nearly 40,000 structures and potentially change the iconic nighttime view of Manhattan. College GameDay is doing something different this week. College football’s premier pregame show is broadcasting live from New York City. Here are the best signs from Times Square.

The powers that be at ESPN made the decision for Week 4 to not send College GameDay to a traditional location. Instead, they sent Rece Davis and the gang to New York City. It was a polarizing decision among fans of the show. The energy of the show is a major part of why the show works. When it is not on a college campus, the show suffers.

Times Square is an interesting case though. One of the most annoying clichés about movies or TV shows set in New York is that the city is another character. With College GameDay, the location brings with it actual characters because the fans that come are a part of the show. When they usually broadcast from a neutral site there isn’t a built-in fanbase. They have to rely on fans traveling with their teams. New York doesn’t have that problem.

New York is filled with transplants from colleges all over the country. The city is dotted with bars that open on Saturdays for their respective fans to come watch their alma maters play. There is something missing with not having the college students. However, there are plenty of fans to draw from. Also, Times Square is just a crazy place on a normal day.

Let’s see how the New York City fans did with one of College GameDay’s biggest traditions, the signs:

Not really a sign but still pretty great.

That’s a respectable showing from a unique crowd. The signs and College GameDay as a whole will always be better when it is on a college campus, but as far as neutral sites go New York City is one of the better ones.
