College Football Rankings 2017: Projected Week 5 AP Top 25 Poll
By Zach Bigalke
Against a winless Baylor team, No. 3 Oklahoma faced an unexpected test to begin Big 12 play. The Bears had Lincoln Riley’s team on upset alert in Waco throughout the evening, as defense went by the wayside in a 90-point shootout. Matt Rhule’s squad will rue the squandered opportunity to pull off an upset, and Oklahoma will suffer in the polls as a result of their narrow escape on the road.
The Sooners defense allowed Zach Smith to gash them through the air. Baylor’s quarterback completed 66 percent of his passes for 463 yards and four touchdowns on the day. He was not intercepted, and only a concurrent offensive outburst by Oklahoma prevented the Sooners from dropping their first contest of the year.
Though they still boast a big road win over Ohio State on their resume, Oklahoma could fall behind USC and maybe even Penn State this week in the AP Top 25. They will try to rebound at home next weekend against Iowa State before the Red River Shootout against Texas on Oct. 7. After a scare, Riley’s team will be on high alert moving forward.
