Winner: West Virginia Mountaineers

unranked in the AP Poll to No. 23

The 23rd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers find themselves back in the AP Poll rankings after winning their third game in a row. The Mountaineers lost their season opener to 12th-ranked Virginia Tech to fall out of the AP Poll after Week 2, but now they’re back after a 56-34 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks.

West Virginia is now 1-0 in Big 12 play after the victory, although it was close at the end. The Mountaineers outscored Kansas 21-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away late.

The offense got two 100-yard rushing days from running backs Justin Crawford and Kennedy McKoy. Crawford ran for 125 rushing yards and a touchdown. McKoy ran for 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Will Grier threw for 347 passing yards and two passing touchdowns and also ran for two scores himself.

The Mountaineers defense overcame 291 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns from Kansas running back Khalil Herbert to get the victory. Their secondary allowed 197 passing yards in the game.

The Mountaineers are slowly re-emerging as a team to watch in the Big 12 as well. Next up for them is No.9 TCU on the road.
