ACC Football Power Rankings 2017: Florida State falls in Week 5
The Boston College Golden Eagles dropped their third-straight game of the season to the second-ranked Clemson Tigers in Week 4. They hung close with the Tigers as the score was tied 7-7 entering the fourth quarter, but didn’t have enough to get the victory.
Quarterbacks Darius Wade and Anthony Brown combined for two turnovers against Clemson, voiding the two interceptions their defense forced. Their scoring offense ranks 120th in the FBS in points per game (15.0) and they’ve scored 12.3 points per game in their three losses.
Steve Addazio’s time may be coming to an end as the Golden Eagles head coach, they’re 0-2 in ACC play. They’ve got one more nonconference game this week against the Central Michigan Chippewas.
The Pittsburgh Panthers are another team that looked to be on the ropes once again under head coach Pat Narduzzi. They’ve also lost three-straight games heading into Week 5.
The defense forced four turnovers (all fumbles), but the offense couldn’t seem to turn much of that into points. Wide receiver Quadree Henderson kept the Panthers in it with an 80-yard punt return touchdown to tie things up in the second quarter.
The Panthers offense ranks 111th in the FBS in scoring (20.0 ppg) and managed only 17 points against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defense. They went 1-of-13 on third down conversions in the game, splitting time between quarterbacks Ben DiNucci and Max Browne.
Defensively, they allowed the Yellow Jackets’ Triple Option to pummel them for 436 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
The Syracuse Orange fell to the 25th-ranked LSU Tigers this week, but it wasn’t without trying as they lost 35-26. The Orange had 384 total yards of offense in the game, but just 76 of those yards came on the ground.
Syracuse trailed 14-3 at halftime but still managed to comeback in the second half. They got as close as 28-26 with a sequence of a safety, followed by a touchdown, an interception and another touchdown before a final LSU touchdown sealed it.
It wasn’t a bad showing against an SEC squad, but still, the Orange have yet to improve the win column as they are 2-2 on the season. They travel to NC State this week to begin ACC play.
After getting their first victory of the season 53-23 over Old Dominion in Week 3, the Tar Heels laid another egg at home in their 27-17 conference opener to the Duke Blue Devils.
Quarterback Chazz Surratt led the way for the offense with 259 passing yards and 77 rushing yards but a pick-six he threw late in the fourth quarter. He finished with a passing and a rushing touchdown.
Wide receiver Anthony Ratliff-Williams is emerging as a solid receiving threat. He had five receptions for 125 receiving yards and a touchdown reception. It seems it’s Surratt’s offense now as quarterback Brandon Harris didn’t play at all in the game.
